RPC/HTTP SBS 2003 fails ping

Question
-
This is a small single server network that I am trying to get remote exchange connectivity working for cell phones and laptops. Their web page is hosted elsewhere so this server only handles e-mail and file sharing.
Connectivity tester gets as far as pinging before erroring out
HTTPS:\\MAIL.domain.COM\rpc <o:p><o:p>
Gives a login but fails with a 404 error after trying to login.
I've been going around and around on this one and have followed trouble shooting post to verify rpcproxy is in the correct directory. The only thing that seems wrong is in Exchange System Manager, the RPC-HTTP screen will not let me select "FRONT END SERVER" The other teo options are "Not part of an Exchange managed RPC-HTTP topology" and "Backend server".

Hi there,
Exchagne 2003 is out of support, it is recommended to upgrade to higher version like Exchange 2010 or Exchange 2013.
See http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search/?alpha=Exchange+Server&wa=wsignin1.0
Just for your reference, we may run the online test from https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com/
and the RPC test url is: Https://fqdn/rpc/rpcproxy.dll
Hope it is helpful.

I didn't notice SBS in the subject. This article has a whole bunch of links that should help: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123622(v=exchg.65).aspx. Shout if you have any issues.

Hi Joe,
I agree with Fiona, once you're over the learning curve there's a ton of benefits to upgrading. But you don't need to be lectured on that ;)
The Front End\Back End concept only really comes in if you have more than one server and one is designated as a front end server. You'll need to look at this slightly differently with only one server. Hopefully this article gets you started down the right road: http://www.msexchange.org/articles-tutorials/exchange-server-2003/migration-deployment/Implementing-RPC-over-HTTPS-single-Exchange-Server-2003-environment.html
I hope this helps,

Thanks for some support rather than a sales pitch. I don't want to spend $ on something that doesn't work for another set of headaches.
