SCCM 2012 RTM to SCCM 2012 R2 SP RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have a single SCCM 2012 RTM server. We are looking to upgrade to SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 so that we can manage our Windows 10 clients.

Am i correct in saying the quickest upgrade path from RTM is:

    • SCCM 2012 SP1
    • SCCM 2012 SP1 CU1
    • SCCM 2012 R2 SP1

Do Microsoft provide any guides, procedures or considerations for the above scenario?

Also, i understand the SCCM agent on the client computers will also need updating. Can we do this once we've got to R2 SP1 or should we do it at each 3 stages above.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Phil,

Ideally you want to upgrade to SCCM CB to manage Win 10 clients.

  • ConfigMgr 2012 R2 SP1 does not [fully] support Windows 10; 2012 R2 SP1 partially supports Win 10 1511 and fully supports LTSB 2015 but no other builds/releases of Win 10 are supported.

Thus, as Paul noted, upgrading to 2012 R2 SP1 will not give you this, but upgrading to ConfigMgr Current Branch will give you full Win 10 support (1706 is the latest released production version).

For client agents, yes, you need to upgrade the client agent as well as the server infrastructure. If you have to go to an intermediary build on the site though there is no reason you must do so on the client agents.
