OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "sqlinstance" returned message "No transaction is active.". [SQLSTATE 01000] (Error 7412).  The step failed.

  • This is usually an issue with MSDTC, which is a tricky subject in it's own right.  Make sure that you have enabled remote access through Component Services.  And that you have appropriate firewall rules in place to allow communication.

  • You can go through further troubleshooting steps like disabling firewalls etc.  Using DTCPing to verify two way comms are working.  Checking deeper into SQL logs.

It may also be worth asking in a SQL server forum as they'll likely to have more experience with SQL backup related issues.  I don't have a direct answer for you.
