  • Question

  • Hi,

What is the difference between opening and updating the local cache project  and opening/updating project from the server in Project Server 2013?

  • Opening a project from the cache and from the server should be the same.

If you open a project from the cache and there has been changes to the project on the server, it will still download any changes.

The only thing to make note of is if there is a connection issue it wouldn't download these changes.

  • Hi,

Here is an excellent article about the local cache:

    http://www.epmcentral.com/msproject/cacheoverview.php

Basically, the purpose is to improve the performance and communication between the client and the server, when you open, save and publish a project. You retreive the project from your cache which will be faster (only the differences from the server version will be downloaded). Also the save operation is local and you take back the control while the cache save the difference on the server version.

Here is also a usefull diagram from this reference:

    Hope this helps,
