GPO with "Site to Zone Assignment List" cleared itself after editing

    Question

  • Hi all,

I have quite an old GPO with IE settings and several websites in the "Site to Zone Assignment List".

A few weeks ago additional websites were added to the zone list, but after saving the list it was empty, all the websites, old and new, have disappeared, but other GPO settings were still present.
I have restored the GPO from backup and the same thing happened after adding new sites.
I restored the GPO again, left it as it is and created a new GPO just for the new sites, and it worked
    ... for some time.
Now again the same thing happened to the new GPO that has only 6 sites in the "Site to Zone Assignment List" - adding a new site clears the whole list.

I have edited the GPO's from Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 10 +RSAT with the same outcome.

I hope you can help me out here.

This can happen, if you integrate a wrong character/coding/syntax.
e.g. by copy pasting from a HTML to this box.

If the character can not be saved, the whole registry.pol file is
    corrupt and empty.

  • I was able to partially fix the issue - it turned out that a colleague had a "broken console" and removing %appdata%\Microsoft\MMC\gpmc file solved the issue in regard to the new GPO. Everyone in the team is able to edit it successfully.

Unfortunately the original GPO still fails.

I'm aware of the character / wildcard requirements for the "Site to Zone Assignment List" and I'm quite sure this is not the case, but I'll double-check.
