OWA and Excel Services

    Question

  • We have a requirement for some of our sites to use Excel Services whereas other sites do not need the enterprise features that Excel Services offers.

Is there a way to specify that Excel Services is used for some sites but for Excel Web App to be used for the rest?

  • It can be divided based on web application but not site collection.

In Central Admin > Web Application > Select Web Application > On top Select Service Connectors > Select drop down and make it custom > now select everything except what you dont want i.e. excel services, OWA

  • Hi,

Site collection administrators and users can use the OpenInClient feature in SharePoint 2013 to specify whether Office files will be opened in the client application or in the browser. Users can change this setting in the document library properties, and site collection administrators can change it in Site Collection Administration or by using the Enable-SPFeature cmdlet to enable the OpenInClient feature. See the next section for several different methods to enable the OpenInClient feature.

If the OpenInClient feature of a SharePoint 2013 library or site collection is enabled, documents will open in the client application even if you've configured the SharePoint 2013 server to use Office Web Apps Server.

  • Thanks Rebecca.

What I was looking for though was a way to allow some sites to use Excel Services whilst using OWA for other sites.

  • Hi,

The command New-SPWOPISuppressionSetting could be used to turn off Office Web Apps for the action, file name extension, or programmatic identifier.

As workaround, we could use OpenInClient feature to make documents will open in the client application even if you've configured the SharePoint 2013 server to use Office Web Apps Server.
