How do i reinstall and/or fix the Start Menu RRS feed

  • Question

  • When entering a search term in the Start Menu search block, the menu blanks and does not display anything.  Then when clicking on "see more results" I get the following error message -- "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file.  You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

    I have checked all areas where the Windows Search function is set on and they are okay.  What else can I do?  Is there a way  to re-install the Start Menu function without re-installing all of Windows 7?

    Restoring a previous restore point did not help as the issue most likely has existed longer than the oldest restore point.

    Can anyone help with this critical issue?

  • Is this problem seen only in your user account, or is it a machine-wide problem? Meanwhile, try this:

    Click Start, Default Programs

    Click Set your default programs

    Select Windows Search Explorer

    Click Set this program as default, and click OK.

    If that doesn't help, try this:

    Press WinKey + R to bring up the Run dialog. Paste the following command-line and press {ENTER}

    "C:\Windows\system32\msdt.exe" -id SearchDiagnostic -ep ControlPanelSearch

    Click Next, and complete the troubleshooter successfully.
