dfrgntfs.exe constantly running on infinate loop - using around 50 % CPU on Vista Home Premium RRS feed

  • Question

  • Please can anyone help me - I cant find a hotfix for this problem on the Microsoft site

Im using service Pack 2 but not sure of the windows server version etc

I have tried changing the value for enabling defrag from y to n in the reg edit application, but it still comes back

Internet freezing problems / general browsing + High CPU usage notifier from Norton comes on quite alot with the cause being dfrgntfs.exe even when idle

  • Check the Windows Task Scheduler: there could be some scheduled task that makes the defragment program wake up and run whenever the system is idle.
Which Norton program are you using? Maybe it has configured the defragmenter to run at fixed time intervals freezing your system (defragmentation must be performed only when there are no running programs).
