Windows installer - UNKNOWN registry key RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I have a problem with install projects built using Visual Studio. I had a project which would not uninstall successfully (I have had this before) and made use of the "Windows Installer Clean Up" utility msicuu.exe (I have also done this before).

I now find that I cannot uninstall 2 of my projects. The uninstall procedure fails with the message:

    Could not open key:
UNKNOWN\Components\359AB4...............................C2D. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or conatct your support personnel.

If I use mscicuu to uninstall the project, clean up the install folder and then try to re-install I will get the same message and the project will no longer install.

If I increment the product version number I am able to install but get the same problem on uninstall.

This happens only on my development machine (Vista x64 Business edition - UAC is disabled). I have not seen any problems on test virtual machines which run Windows XP.

I am wondering if I have a registry problem caused during one of the msicuu invocations or maybe the recent security downloads (Tuesday this week) could have changed some access to the registry??

    Any help would be appreciated.
