Side-by-side migration from FIM 2010 R2 to MIM 2016. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi folks,

I'm looking at moving from FIM 2010 R2 to MIM 2016 solely to move to being earlier in a mainstream support phase.

Is there any worthwhile guidance on a side-by-side migration of just the Synchronisation Service from FIM 2010 R2 to MIM 2016? We do not run (or intend to run) any of the other bolt-on services such as the portal.

Under the hood, I was a little disappointed to see that it still appears to be the same 2010 R2 engine - albeit with a minor build revision, but that does give me hope that I can port across things like the management agents and even the schema (though I doubt my process would be supported) with minimal effort (i.e. not having to re-create them by hand).

Just to be clear, I'm not looking to bring across the data, just the management agent definitions and custom schema objects.

I'm categorically not interested in performing an in-place upgrade.

    Cheers,
    Lain

  • Hi Lain,

It should be simple - you should be able to simply export the management agents from the FIM server and import them on the MIM server, or you can export the whole lot, schema-included by using Export Server Configuration from the file menu.

    Thanks,

    Paul.

  • Hi Paul,

Yes, that's what I was alluding to in my first statement (third paragraph) where I wasn't sure if this was a supported scenario since I've only been able to find literature on an in-place upgrade.

So, is what you're saying that it's officially supported to use this approach?

    Cheers,
    Lain
