What is private cloud? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have gone through MS private cloud documentation. After setting up all fabric, cloud is created simply by going through "create cloud wizard" From then on, our VMs or clusters are being placed into that cloud. We are creating various Profiles, VM template, and service templates enabling following IT Service deployment to use these Profiles, VM template, and services templates for the ease of deployment.

My question is that, what that cloud is contributing here? Without creating cloud, yet we should be able to create  Profiles, template, and services for reuse afterwards. Resource are still available to create VMs from clustered hosts without creating "Cloud". what is the difference  Cloud is making on top of virtualization?

Please help clarifying this "cloud" term.

  • This question may lead to a very long answer, but to try to be precise and shot:

The cloud you create in VMM can be used together with SPF and Windows Azure Pack.

The key to understand here is that the cloud you create in VMM, is a level of abstraction that can provide workloads to users/customers through self-service.

Here, you can also create rules, define elasticity and what resources should be available.

I wrote this whitepaper during the 2012 release of System Center for two years ago, that should give you a better understanding of Microsoft Private Cloud: http://blogs.technet.com/b/privatecloud/archive/2012/05/01/understanding-the-microsoft-private-cloud-whitepaper-by-kristian-nese.aspx
