Central Administration no Longer Opens after Upgrading Internet Explorer RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm having an issue when trying to open Central Administration using the shell command from the Start menu on my SharePoint servers.  Internet Explorer stops working immediately and errors out.  This started happening on all my servers after upgrading them to Internet Explorer 8.  I can still access the site fine when opening a browser first and then navigating to the Central Administration website but I've heard it's best practice to always use the actual shell command when opening it.

Any ideas?  I suppose I could remove IE8 and see what happens.

  • Are you by any chance on a 64-bit OS and using the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer? You may want to see if the default browser on the server is the 64-bit version or the 32-bit version, or it could be that the SharePoint shortcuts were somehow mistakenly updated to point to the 64-bit iexplorer.exe application instead of the 32-bit one...

  • John,

I am running a 64-bit OS but I don't believe the 64-bit version if Internet Explorer is the default but I'm not sure how I could check that.  The Central Admin link in the Start Menu points to this command, ""C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN\psconfigui.exe" -cmd showcentraladmin"

I'm not sure how to get in and dissect that command to see what's happening and what it's trying to call.  It just seems odd I can access the website just fine after opening Internet Explorer first using both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

This might not help much but here's the error IE throws up when I try to run the command:

  • Ok...based on that error information, it sounds awfully similar to this issue: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sharepointadmin/thread/27ffb2f2-b582-4cc9-9e46-94a0a905abdd

If that's the case, then you'll want to try removing any Add-Ins that are installed in IE 8 and see if that resolves the issue. If it doesn't, then you'll want to try uninstalling the MS Java Virtual Machine from the browser as mentioned in this blog post: http://www.slickit.ca/2009/03/internet-explorer-fix-ie8-dep-crashes.html

    Best of luck,
