WSUS and client servicing stack updates RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have good number of Windows 10 1903 clients trying to run windows update.  They can get everything I've approved in WSUS except for the Servicing Stack Update for Windows 10 Version 1903 for x64-based Systems.  Each time it stalls at "Downloading - 0%".  Every client, Every time.

So, I'm thinking there's something going on with my WSUS box.

The only work around is going to each box and installing the update manually that I get from Windows Catalog.

    Any ideas?

    TIA.  -Michael.

Is the Update downloaded from WSUS? If yes, try this in a Commandline you open it with Admin Rights:

    net stop wuauserv
    rd /s /q %windir%\Softwaredistribution
    shutdown -r -t 0

After reboot wait for 10 Minutes, now try to download Updates from
    WSUS again.

  • Hi,

In the update view in the WSUS console, right click on the header bar and select "FILE STATUS". Find SSU and check if its file status is normal.

The normal situation should be the same as in the figure. If the download is not completed or the download is wrong, you will see other icons.

If the file status is ok, please check the Windows Update.log file on the client, invoking the Powershell command get-windowsupdatelog on a Windows 10 machine, check if it contains an error about kb4498947.

Reply back with the results would be happy to help.

    Regards,
    Yic

  • Well, the powershell command (running in an elevated session) only returns the following:

The *.etl files aren't text files to be read easily.

Got this from the dump file:

"Populated download Url for file Windows10.0-KB4498523-x64-express.cab as http://wsus.<name witheld>.local:8530/Content/b3f33f7d9fbc025e7a5f1db0ae8e6a950120a21b.cab."

  • Update:

The same EXACT thing is happening on my Win2k19 boxes too (the servicing stack updates).

I think it's safe to say now that this is an issue with WSUS

Download the update from Update Catalog and try to install it manually
on one server. It es working?

  • Winfried.Sonntag,

Installing manually works just fine.  But that's very time consuming considering the number of instances there are.

Did you use 3 entrys for WSUS in your GPO? If yes, try it with 2,
alternate downloadserver could be the mistake.

  • Winfried.Sonntag,

I'm not quite sure what you mean by 3 entries in my GPO.

Also, all other updates install from WSUS just fine.
