  • If you do want to switch to Project Server permissions you'll need to run the following PowerShell.

    Set-SPPRojectPermissionMode -Url http://AppServer/pwa -AdministratorAccount contoso\John.Woods

  • Hi Mary,

Permissions can be painful to setup but this can all be fixed.  First off, are you using Project Online or Project Server?  If it's Project Server, which version?  Also, are you using Project Server permissions or SharePoint permissions?

The SharePoint default permission for a user that creates a new project is that of Project Owner.  This permission set is germane to the specific project website (aka SharePoint site).

If you can answer the questions in the first paragraph you'll get some pretty quick answers for your permissions questions.

  • Hi Mary,

Which mode of security you are using? SharePoint or ProjectServer? Refer to below link for understanding and probably revisiting your security templates

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc197354.aspx

Please share your security categories and templates which may give a better idea as well about what is configured behind the scene.

  • The permissions for changing the page design ect. are found in the SharePoint permissions.

Go to Site Settings -> People and Groups find the appropriate group and modify the permissions.

  • Dear John;

I did it before, we wanted our project managers and PMO guys can publish projects and absolutely create project site on that time too, so we redistricted their permissions to just do these things, but when they publish a project, they become a project owner and   this role just like ADMIN!!!!

if restricted project owner, they can't publish projects !!!!

    it's complicated and I'm very confused ....

  • Mary,

The issue you're experiencing is that the default "Project Owner" permission that is granted on each project site is "Full permissions".  To fix this you need to un-check a few boxes associated with the "Project Owner" permissions which are always granted to the creator of a new site.

Try this - From Project Central select “Site settings” then “Site permissions”.  Click “Permission Levels” at the top of the page.  Select any default SharePoint Site permission that you'd like to change and uncheck any of the permissions you do not want the group to have.

Let me know if this helps.

  • Check out this link too.  It breaks down how project site permissions work.

  • Hi,

please use the project permission mode instead of share point permission mode, by the use of project permission mode you can create the custom groups and categories for the project server.

  • NajeebUllah is absolutely right about Project Server permissions mode.

You can be extremely specific with your permissions settings.  However, this much more complicated than SharePoint permissions so expect to invest some considerable time setting it up.  If you’re new to the software this might be more than you want to bite off.
