Machine Does not respond RRS feed

  • Question

  • For the past two weeks, whenever I leave my computer on and go away for an extended period, such as to work, or go to sleep, when I come back to the machine, it will not respond.  It is running, but I cannot get its attention.  So ctrl-alt-del doesn't work, for example, moving the mouse doesn't work, etc.

This is typical behavior for windows updates, which take over my computer in the same way, but the current behavior seems to last all day.

I have checked for a virus, and my system is clean, so I have a series of questions

how can I tell what is trying to update my computer?  Is there a log file I can read that has this info?

If it is an update attempt, can I stop it?  I tried using windows update (from control panel, but this didn't work)

How can I get my computers attention short of hard reboot?
