internet security settings blocked one or more files from being opened RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, recently ran into a weird error, as described in the title. Every time a user wants to extract some archive, he right clicks on it and a popup appears saying "internet security settings blocked one or more files from being opened" Can click Continue or Cancel iirc. The file is not not blocked, but just gets a warning. It does not happen for other users working with the same files and settings. Tried resetting internet explorer security settings, tried setting Enable on Launching applications and unsafe files and Launching programs and files in an IFRAME in security settings on all the zones, still get the same. Any other options? Could it be UAC or something else? Thanks

  • Hi,

I noticed the error message, this issue may occur because the following conditions are true:

The file type that you are trying to open is considered unsafe.

The Launching applications and unsafe files security setting is set to Disable for the zone that is associated with where the file originated.

  • Hey, tried all the solutions from the links - did not help. Users are working with the same files and this only happens on one computer so far, even though others have identical hw and sw setups. The files are not being blocked though, just a warning which you can ignore and then the context menu appears. It can't be a windows defender issue as it's turned off, we have a different antivirus. This only happens when right clicking on archives. I'm completely lost as it just started happening out of the blue.

Did you look at the whole thread?  Answers now obscures the full thread for "answered" threads, so you would need to click on All Replies in order to see anything else.

    a different antivirus

Try working without it?  Uninstalling if necessary.  Note that one of the unmarked responses in that Answers thread was a report that "deleting Norton" was their solution.

only happens when right clicking on archives.

A potential clean-boot troubleshooting opportunity.  E.g. get rid of things that change that menu.

Otherwise with two cases you could run ProcMon to trace both and compare the traces for their significant differences.  Filter coarsely at first until you find an interesting divergence and then go deeper.

    Good luck
