In place OS, SQL, and DPM 2016 Upgrade - HELP I'm lost! RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I am looking for advice/guidance/answers to upgrade my DPM environment.  At present I have:

DPM Server - Server 2012 (no R2), SCDPM 2012 R2 Rollup Update 13 (physical server)

    DPM Database Server – Server 2008 R2. SQL 2008 R2 (VM)

What I want to do is use the same physical server and storage and upgrade to Server 2016 and DPM 2016, also moving the database from the separate VM to the same physical server and upgrade to SQL 2016 as well.

I have seen so many people who have done bits and pieces and who have used different scenarios to get to the same end result.  What do you experts recommend?  Since, DPM is just one of my many duties I am looking for a way to accomplish this as quickly and easily as possible without losing any of my protected data both locally and in Azure.

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Hi kenk223,

I've done a similar upgrade myself and it worked out very well.

I had DPM 2012 R2 (RU14) with SQL Server 2012, running on a Windows Server 2012 (non R2) so I did the following steps:

    1. Upgraded the Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2012 R2.
    2. Upgraded DPM 2012 R2 to DPM 2016.

    • Before you can do any upgrade, you will have to upgrade your operating system to Windows Server 2012 R2.
    • Also note that DPM 2016 requires an SQL Server version of SQL Server 2012 SP2 (Standard or Enterprise 64-Bit) or higher.

Please go through to the article below before doing any upgrade.
