How to install Win 8.1 Preview in an existing VHD installation?

  • Hi,

I have a Win 8 Pro running on a VHD (dual boot, not Hyper-V).

How can I install the Win 8.1 preview?

I tried installing from the Windows 8.1 Preview ISO files, but I get the message: «This PC can't run Windows 8.1 Preview».

  • I think upgrading a Windows doesn't work when you use native VHD boot.

You can use this Powershell script to convert the 8.1 ISO into a new VHD:

    Convert-WindowsImage.ps1 - WIM2VHD for Windows 8!

  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply, but my objective was to do the upgrade since I already have installed SW that I did not want to re-install.

When I try to install Win 8.1 from the app store I get the following error message

    Any ideas?

  • this error means you have network issues:

  • Hi,

I re-tried in another network without proxy and I got again that I cannot installed in a virtual drive.

    The error message is now

Does this means that we are not able to test the Win8.1 Preview in a dual-boot?

  • Looks like 0xc1900104 means that you don't have enough free space to install Windows 8.1:
