SQL instances on SfB servers RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Does anybody knows about SQL instances on Skype for Business servers

We are facing this instances on all Skype for Business servers:

RTCLOCAL - Express edition (well-known sql instance)

LYNCLOCAL -Express edition (well-known sql instance)

MSSQLSERVER - Enterprise Evaluation edition (what is it used for?)

RTCLOCAL,LYNCLOCAL -this instances are used for storing information about all configurations and other goals.

What is the instance MSSQLSERVER used for? why is it installed as evaluation version? We have nicely licensed our back-end already. Do we need additional licenses for SQL server for all servers.

  • Sounds like a default instance got installed as well.  You likely don't need this, and it's not Lync related unless someone forced some Monitoring or other data into it.  Check to ensure there are no databases in there, and make sure you have good backups before you remove it.

  • That is correct Sergey. Never seen those with the FE installation. Yes confirm the DB is not  used by any other application ,  and can go ahead and remove them.

  • Thanks for the reply Anthony.

The default databases are placed in this instance, they are: master, model, msdb, tempdb.

We have noticed, that this instance was installed some days before Skype for business distributive was installed on servers.

We have also installed skype for business product on our test farm, this default SQL instance is placed there also.

I'm not sure if we can freely remove it, may be it is installed by some of SfB pre-requisites?

  • Hi Sergey Astreyko,

If you don’t specify an instance name when you install SQL, then this default instance will be installed.

To ensure it is not used, you can check the configurations in topology.

    Best regards,

    Eric

  • thanks for the reply.

But the question was about default instance on FE servers, called MSSQLSERVER (not RTC, not RTCLOCAL and other)

I have installed test environment and noticed, that this Default instance of SQL Evaluation was installed there as well as to our production environment, it is very strange.

I have no idea why the FE installation software comes with this SQL instance.

  • Hi Sergey,

The STD edition Lync/SFB automatically installs  the SQL backend as well due course of installation. but if we have attempted seperate installation of SQL this might have created the the instance  other than that FE installation does not comes with additional installation of SQL instance

  • I mean Enterprise edition Front-End servers.

Back-End SQL is installed on other server, But all of our FE servers have  MSSQLSERVER (default instance) installed from the moment SfB FE role was installed. It's very strange I suppose it is not used anywhere, I will delete this instance later from our FE servers.
