Error installing hotfix (KB2891362) for long path names

    Question

  • I'm trying to install the following hotfix on Server 2008 R2

KB2891362 - A file copy operation fails when files or folders have long paths in Windows Explorer
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2891362/a-file-copy-operation-fails-when-files-or-folders-have-long-paths-in-w

When I try to install the hotfix I get the following error:
    Windows Update Standalone Installer
The update is not applicable on your computer.

    I'm trying to install the x64 hotfix (Windows6.1-KB2891362-x64.msu) on SBS 2011 (Server 2008 R2 x64 with Service Pack 1).

  • I finally got this hotfix installed. I had to do it manually though, by extracting the files from the hotfix and then installing the cab file.

    1. Extract the hotfix.msu file
    Run the following command:
Expand -F:* "path and file name to msu file" "path to extract file"

    2. Manually install the extracted cab file package
    Run following command:
DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:"path and file name to cab file"

If Microsoft could actually make their Hotfixes work, I wouldn't have had to waste so much time.
