wsus admin console in server 2008 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all
I am trying to install WSUS on into  server 2008 R2 environment.
    I have a Primary site server - sccm 2007 sp2 on server 2008 r2
I then have a second server as a DP and I have installed wsus as a role, it installed fully and is working fine.
I am of the understanding that I need to install the WSUS admin console on the primary site server to perfrom the wsus config.
There is no option to install a "console only" install from within the roles options
If I download the wsus installer and try to run it I only get the option to install the full product not the admins console.
I have even tryed to install the console only from the run line with no sucess

    Any help or ideas?

    Best wishes

    Paul

  • I am was also trying to install the WSUS admin console on a Windows 2008 R2 SCCM site server and ran into the same problem.

If you try to add Windows Server Update Services as a role from Server Manager it will automatically download the WSUS setup.  On running the WSUS setup, it will not display the Installation Mode Selection page so you cannot select the Administration Console only option.  Even if you run WSUS30-KB972455-x64.exe CONSOLE_INSTALL=1 after, you cannot install the admin console only.  I was about to try another suggestion of WSUS30-KB972455-x64.exe /q CONSOLE_INSTALL=1 which would also skip the prerequisite check, when I found this topic.  Rebooting the server and running WSUS30-KB972455-x64.exe again displays the Installation Mode Selection page.  My guess is the downloaded setup remains cached and this cached copy is triggered when running WSUS30-KB972455-x64.exe.  The cache must be cleared by a reboot.

The workaround is not to try installing the WSUS admin console by adding WSUS as a role from Server Manager first, just download and run WSUS30-KB972455-x64.exe from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=A206AE20-2695-436C-9578-3403A7D46E40&displaylang=en
