New to Business Intelligence Development Studio

Question
-
Hi. I am new to the Microsoft Business Intelligence world. I am trying to figure out what I need installed on my PC to start working with the Business Intelligence Development Studio. I want to work on projects from my PC that are connecting to a SQL Server 2008 server. Are there client-side tools to help me do this? What do I need on my PC.
Thanks.

Hi Billy,
If you havn't already; - purchase a copy of the developer's edition to put on your personal laptop; - SQL Server 2008, Developer Edition; -
Install AdventureWorks 2008R2 RTM; - http://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/releases/view/45907
A client-side tool is Business Intelligence Develoment Studio (BIDS) as you have already mentioned. If you have already access to a SQL Server 2008 server, I still recommend purchasing the developer's license because having a local server instance is very useful.
If not, you can load the client tools; - BIDS and SQL Server Managment Studio (SSMS) onto your PC by accessing the DVD which was used to create the SQL Server 2008 server installation. You can install only the client tools on your PC by running the setup.exe program, clicking next until you reach the dialog box with the header "Components to Install", then just check the option "Workstation components, Books Online and development tools."
I also recommend this book as a source of reference; - MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-448): Microsoft SQL Server 2008-Business Intelligence Development and Maintenance: MCTS Exam 70-448 (Self-Paced Training Kits)

Hi Billy,
Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) is a feature of SQL Server, which is used to develop SQL Server BI solutions and included in SQL Server 2008 Enterprise/Developer/Standard/Web/Workgroup/Express with Advanced Services editions.
You can install BIDS feature from any of above mentioned editions by running the setup of the SQL Server 2008 on your development computer. Since BIDS use the same setup process of SQL Server 2008, in order to install BIDS successfully please make sure the system meet the installation requirements of SQL Server 2008. For more information, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(SQl.100).aspx.
If you have more queries, please let me know.
