Unable to change a desktop icon in Windows 7 RRS feed

  • Question

  • My computer is joined to a Windows Server 2003 domain.  As a domain user it look like I'm not able to display or change the icon picture for a shortcut on my desktop.  The shortcut just appear as a rectangular box with the text below it.  But when I right-click on the shortcut, select Properties, select the Program Tab and click on the Change Icon button the picture for the icon that I want is displayed, but it won't display it on the desktop.

If I login to the same computer as a local user, I'm able to create a shortcut and assign it an icon and make changes to the icon if I want.   So it seem like there a problem with Windows 7 in a Windows Domain.  I'm a Domain Administrator and I didn't set any policies to prevent users from changing their icon on a Windows 7 PC because I have Windows XP users who login to this domain and they don't have any problem changing there desktop icons.

Is there a GPO I have to created so Windows 7 users in a Windows 2003 Domain can edit their desktop icons?

  • Hi,

normally here is no problem with changing icons. Try remove user from computer and create new accout.

  • Sorry for the late response.  I delete and re-create a new Profile and I'm still not able to change the icon for this shortcut.  I forgot to mention that this shortcut is for a DOS application.  But I'm able to change the icon for a regular Windows application.

  • Hi Alvin C_,

to change your icon you can follow two different way. first you can make your own icon using Photoshop and make .png file then convert it as .icon or the second term you can manually change via your windows update and them icon.

Thanks | see if this helps
