BIOS Change activated bitlocker RRS feed

  • Question

  • hi

a friend gave me an HP Pavilion X2 laptop. I tried to boot this laptop from an external DVD drive with no success. I also changed the "Secure boot" option in BIOS to disable in order to accomplish the above. When I changed the setting back to enable, the Windows 10 bitlocker is activated and asks for a key. We logged in to http://windows.microsoft.com/recoverykeyfaq with his email account but did not find any keys there. and he does not remember ever taking backup of this key.

is there a way to find out if the recovery key was backed up locally or to some other email account ?

note that he used to login to the laptop using pin

  • There is no way to find out what he did with the recovery key, no.

It is mandatory in the encryption process to either save it to a file on another disk or network share, or print it, so it will exist somewhere. Bitlocker recovery mode was triggered, because you changed security relevant bios parameters. Before you do this (next time), always suspend bitlocker.

I am afraid he will have to remember or resort to his last backup.
