  • Question

  • Good day

I am a new employee in the IT department at my company, and I was assigned to research and buy subscriptions of MS Project Online Professional for 5 users. What do I need to know to start on the subscriptions? Do I need to contact system providers?

    Your kind opinion is appreciated.

  • If you are buying via subscription then you need to buy the Project Online Professional licence for 5 users.  This also gives you Project Online (Project Server in the cloud) as part of the licence, and if you want to use this then I would suggest contacting a specialist in this area and getting some advice as you will need a Project Online Premium licence too.  If however you are just creating .mpp project plans then you don't need to worry about the project online piece.

  • Thank you for your response.

If I have subscriptions for 5 users (all managers of different departments), can other employees be given tasks and use MS project? e.x: IT manager (with a subscription) assigns a task to an assistant. Can the assistant have access to Project Online?

  • To do this you would need to implement "Project Online", set up users and a resource pool, and publish your projects to Project Web App.  The resource could then use the "My tasks" feature of Project Online to see their tasks, and potentially update them too (set the task status). The users do this via a browser, and require the essentials licence.   The users do not use MS Project.   The updates are then approved/declined be the PM and then MS Project is updated with the approved updates when MS Project is next opened.

Setting up Project Online requires knowledge, and it's at this stage that you should engage a specialist (IMHO)
