O365 Group & Its associate site?

    Question

  • Hello Forum,

"Every Office 365 Group gets a modern SharePoint team site", This a famous statement we heard many times, and many of us love it.

My colleague has created a group and invited me into it as a member, and I do see it already in my Outlook and I can access its modern team site which its URL is: https://TenantName.sharepoint.com/sites/GroupName/

    My questions are:

    1) I am a global administrator in our Office 365 tenant and I have full control on all our services. But, When I go to: SharePoint admin center > Site Collections > I did NOT find the Group's Team Site listed there - Why? The URL seems to be in my tenant, But, Where does it reside?

    2) How can get hold of this site and reach it i.e. access it and manage it ?

    3) Whenever I access this Group's Team site, I am ALWAYS keep on redirecting me to:

    https://TenantName.sharepoint.com/sites/GroupName/Shared%20Documents/Forms/AllItems.aspx

Why cannot I go to other URLs of the site like:

    https://TenantName.sharepoint.com/sites/GroupName/_layouts/15/settings.aspx
    https://TenantName.sharepoint.com/sites/GroupName/_layouts/15/viewlsts.aspx

Of course, I wanna access these pages to be able to Add page and try to learn.

Please, Help me to understand more about the group's site !

  • Group sites have always been hidden in the UI, you can access them via PowerShell or the APIs. It uses a different template, so not all functionality you are used to will be available.

The new, Team Sites however are not rolled yet, so you are most likely looking at the old version (pretty much an ODFB document library).

  • Can you share with me the PowerShell cmdlets for managing the group's site?

  • Managing is a bit of overstatement. You can check some of their properties via PowerShell or CSOM, but pretty much the only thing you can do is change the quota. Here's and example:

    Get-SPOSite https://tenant.sharepoint.com/sites/groupname

    Url Owner Storage Quota
    --- ----- -------------

  • How can I delete this group's site?
    Thursday, October 6, 2016 7:22 PM
  • You cant. The only object you can work with is the group as a whole. Delete the group if you want, but you cannot just remove the site, or the mailbox associated with the group.

  • Are you sure?

What will happen if I use Remove-SPOSite ?

I want my users to use groups but I want them to use a special customized sites that we are provisioning for them separately. I don't want them to use the plain group's site.

What do you recommend Vasil ?

  • You could probably set the storage quota to a small number which would discourage its use, but that would cripple the user experience because they're meant to be used together.

When you go to the group conversations page in Outlook Online, there is a Files link there.
    Same in Planner.

Currently you cannot change the URL of that link, but maybe you will in the future.
