Windows Vista SP2 (x32) update fails with error vista ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER(0x80070057)

Question

Hi,
I tried to update my VISTA Ultimate (x32) SP1 to SP2. After 2 minutes the installation allways ends with the obove mentioned error message.
The SP2 is from the installation package I downloaded from the Microsft website.
The Installation of the KB947821 runs without any problems.
Any ideas??

Hi...
I have the same error code. I am upgrading vista business sp1 to sp2. It went through the install procedure, restarded the machine and presented me with <ctrl> <alt> <delete>. When I logged in the blue screen came up. I restarted the machine and it went through the three stages of installing the service pack and restarted then the message came up that the sp didnt install and it was reverting the changes... I don't know!!!
It would be good if anyone could help.
Thanks.Tuesday, July 7, 2009 10:36 AM -

OrthegaThursday, August 27, 2009 12:49 PMHi all,
FYI, removing only the kb972036 is sufficient to solve that issue.
It can be reinstalled after SP2 installation running Windows Update as usual.
Hope this helps!Thursday, August 27, 2009 1:34 PMHi all,

Does the machine have to restarted once the update is removed before trying to install sp2 again?Thursday, August 27, 2009 6:59 PMWorks well with :
Windows 2008 Server Standard x86, Fr, 32 bits
under VMWare ESXi 3.5Thursday, August 27, 2009 7:26 PMhi!
i uninstalled the KB972036 update, and now when i 'm trying to download the SP2 via Auto Update, it seems to get stuck to 'Downloading 1 Update, 0KB Overall 0% Completed'.
Anyone knows why ? thanks
p.s. I also get BSoD quite often after removing that update... :S
is it just coincidence?Friday, August 28, 2009 3:25 AMHi:
Step by step:
- Remove KB972036
- Reboot
- download SP2 standalone package (do NOT go to Windows Update yet)
32 bits: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=a4dd31d5-f907-4406-9012-a5c3199ea2b3
64 bits: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=656c9d4a-55ec-4972-a0d7-b1a6fedf51a7
- Install from standalone, it should work (if it's not the case, you must have another issue. Consider doing an inplace upgrade or contact MS support).
After installing, you can go to WU, the update should reinstall.
If you have any issue doing that, contact your local Microsoft technical support.Friday, August 28, 2009 9:04 AMI have searched sollution 2 days.... Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!Friday, August 28, 2009 10:36 AMHello!

again thx for solve my and others problemFriday, August 28, 2009 9:38 PMHi all.
I have the same problem with SP2 and Vista Home Basic - removed last 4 system patches and SP2 is OK.
Previous removed patches are included in SP2, so Windows Update no longer display them!
