migrate registry keys to new installation of xp RRS feed

  • Question

  • it's a looooooong story, but i have a dell machine running xp home that crashed. ultimately managed to install a fresh copy of xp on a different partition on the (80 g) disk. it runs fine, but doesn't know about any of the aps on the other partition. is there a way to migrate the registry keys to the new installation of xp so that i can run the aps off that new install? (the problem is that there are some bad sectors on the original partition, so i'm a little nervous about bringing over a corrupted registry key.)

  • actually, just thought of this. what about the other way around? can i take the registry keys from the new install and just replace them with their counterparts in the old install? the old one would boot to the user screen, correctly accept the admin password, then crash and start a dump of physical memory, so i'm guessing it's got a problem with a core xp registry key. maybe replacing the bad keys with the new ones would solve the problem?
