Adding mapi id to an existing attribute RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello all,

I wish to use the secretary attribute to store the admin assistant for a user. I have the part covered where I can have end users enter this information (delegation, user interface etc)

I would like to use the exchange details template editor (Exchange 2010) to show this attribute in the Outlook properties of a user. The details template editor only exposes attributes that have a mapiid, so I want to assign one to the secretary attribute.

I am aware of the official support stance: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dgoldman/archive/2007/11/09/adding-attributes-to-the-exchange-details-templates.aspx. I am also aware of the proper method to do this (create a new schema attribute and auto-generate a mapiid for it using http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc223849.aspx, however I am inclined to use the attribute that is already present rather than modifying the schema if there is a way)

I found some posts on the web about connecting via LDP and setting the schemaUpdateinProgress attribute such as these: http://mostlyexchange.blogspot.com/2005/03/adding-attributes-to-exchange-details.html, but these have not worked for my AD on Windows server 2008 R2. The post is also not clear as to which partition the "SchemaUpdateInProgress" attribute is to be created in (domain / schema / config etc). Does anyone know what procedure I might follow to add a mapiid to an existing attribute such as "secretary"?

    thanks and regards,

    -Ravi

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your post.

I think you could use Adding attributes to the Exchange details templates, this is the Exchange Product Groups official stance.

You could also consider extending the Active Directory Schema

  • Hi,

About using Adding attributes to the Exchange details templates, you could ask for exchange engineer for professional support.

MAPI-ID attributeSchema object in the schema has an attribute mapiId.
