Data Protection Manager version 1807 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have a DPM version 1807 with SQL 2016 on the Windows server 2016. I have deployed agent successfully on some Windows 10 x64 Client and I can backup all Volumes. But if I go to open DPM management Client on the windows 10 client I see there"Administrator has not configured backups"

I I go to the Tap "Protected Items" and want to click on any folder, I get the error message as following

    Any Idea?

  • Yes I agree that DPM should be able to do this, DPM's purpose  is more for servers, you could have a look at Veeam which is a very good backup utility as well.

If there's anything else you wonder don't hesitate to ask, otherwise remember to mark as answer.

    Have a good day!

  • Hi,

I had the same in my lab environment, I tested this with Windows 10 64-bit clients on both DPM 2016 & DPM 1807.

It seems that all you have to do is wait for the client (Windows 10) to start synchronizing, it will do this automatically.

It took maybe up to 10-15 minutes and after this I could select Protected items in the Data Protection Manager Client.

These are the steps I did:

    1. I installed the DPM agent on the Windows 10 client by running the DPMAgentInstaller_KB4339950_AMD64.exe from the DPM1807 server
      (Path: \\DPMSERVER\C$\Program Files\Microsoft System Center\DPM\DPM\agents\RA\5.1.378.0\amd64\1033)
    2. I then ran the following command from the Windows 10 client:
      cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\bin"
      SetDpmServer.exe -DPMServerName DPMSERVER
    3. After this I logged on the DPM server and created a new Protection Group.
    4. Chose Clients and then selected my Windows 10 client.
    5. Included what I wanted to protect.
    6. Finish the wizard.
    7. Wait 10-15 minutes for the Windows 10 client computer to automatically start to synchronize.

    Hope this information is useful.

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • Hi,

OK I will try it. Tell me please if this will work, that mean the user can change the backup options, if the Administrator select for example only "Document" folder to backup, but the user can change it and select c:\ and d:\ drive too. Is it so?

My next question is that as you know the DPM cannot backup system state on windows 10 client. When I backup the Volumes C: and D: of winodws 10 client with DPM, one day the windows 10 client crashed and do not start any more. How can I restore the windows client 10?

    Regards

    Nick

  • The user can change the backup options, tested this in my lab environment.

To perform a System State backup on a Windows 10 client you will need to choose Server when adding the client to a protection group or creating a new protection group.

  • Ok but I have tried to choose "Server" option and choose "System State" and added to my group. But as I know you cannot backup the "system state" on windows client. The Error is the following if you try to backup "system state"  on the windows client:

    Affected area: Computer\System Protection
    Occurred since: 28.08.2018 15:07:57
Description: The replica of System Protection Computer\System Protection on Test.local.com is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.

For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)
DPM failed to create the backup. If you are backing up only System State, verify if there is enough free space on the protected computer to store the System State backup.  On protected computers running Windows Server2008 or above, verify that Windows Server Backup (WSB) is installed and that it is not performing any other backup or recovery task. (ID 30214 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990ED0)

Recommended action: You can see the errors reported by WSB in the Eventlog on the protected computer Test1PC.digsilentlocal.com. For resolution actions and more information on these errors, go to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc734488(WS.10).aspx.
    Synchronize with consistency check.

Run a synchronization job with consistency check...

Could you test it in your lab too?

  • I believe that you can only perform a System state backup from the DPM server console.

  • Yes but ONLY for Windows server and not for windows client

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/dpm/dpm-protection-matrix?view=sc-dpm-1807

You can try it on your lab with DPM 2016 and DPM 1807. It will not work to backup "System state!" for windows client.

I don`t know how other Company use DPM for Windows client if windows client crashed, how they can restore windows client with DPM

  • Hi,

I have successfully added System State on my Windows 10 client to my Protection Group in the DPM console on the DPM server.

Normally in a company Windows 10 client gets reinstalled, the data on the clients is usually on a remote drive/storage (for example: storage system), so restoring a system state on a client is not common.

  • Hi,

I know that, I have successfully added the System state on my Windows 10 client too, but you cannot backup that. You will still get error. Because DPM cannot backup the System state of Windows client.

Did you backup successfully the System State of windows client 10 after you added it?

Regarding in a company windows 10 client gets reinstalled, you are right but you have to install you all applications again(Office, web browser, and.....)

    Am I right?

    Regards

    Nick

  • I would agree with Leon, I think more or less is normal and probably best option to just reinstall Windows - of course in bigger environments you should use some kind of automated Windows deployment like WDS or even SCCM.

  • Yes sorry, you are correct, System State is not supported for Windows clients, only the following can be backed up Volume, share, folder, files, deduped volumes.

As for applications and such they will have to be reinstalled either manually or they will get deployed automatically if you’re using SCCM or any similar software.

  • Yes I know about Application and SCCM. But that is not the right solution in a company with 1000 people. reinstall all applications again. In a big company the windows client should be restored with whole applications in 30 minutes.

Microsoft should add this option for windows client too. Then DPM is not the good solution backup for Client machine, maybe for Windows server or SQL or Exchange, but for Windows Client there are better backup software as DPM.

    thanks again for help.
