Default screen for opening new windows and default screen for certain apps. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello. I have a 3 screen setup, where the third screen is in a different room.

So my setups is that I have Mediaportal running on the 3. screen, and this works fine since in Mediaportal I can specified choose that screen to be default.

The issues is that other programs etc suddenly opens on that screen, so I want to force every new window to open on my main screen, if possible I would also be able to set that certain programs opens on  2. screen because thats where I open all my games.

  • Generally speaking in terms of Windows settings, most applications will re-open on the screen where they were previously, especially as long as nothing causes the machine to think the number of displays has changed. That said it's not always reliable, and have loads of situations where an app will randomly decide to start on a different screen. Additionally I think the apps themselves have something to do with it, since some apps simply will not load on anything other than the default screen.

It's worth checking the graphics driver settings for your specific card as some have additional settings to help control things like this.

Failing all that, are you familiar with the shortcut keys for controlling the screen an app is on?

Shift + Windows + either left or right will move the current app to the next screen.

Windows + Up will maximise the current windows on the current screen.

With the two of those if an app does end up on the wrong screen it is at least fairly simple to move it to the correct one, without trying to blindly click on a window you displayed in a different room.
