Can't ping other domain with same subdomain name

    Question

  • Hi,

I created two test Domains/DC's via VMWare workstation and they are on the same subnet (yes, that's not good :-) ).

One domain controller hosts the intranet.city.com domain (192.168.178.69)

The other domain controller hosts the intranet.pvwxcity.com domain (192.168.178.70)

I didn't install DNS. In order to reach the second domain from the first, I modified the hosts file on the first domain controller to contain the following:

    192.168.178.70   intranet.city.com

But I still can't ping the second domain controller with this setting. I can ping the IP address however. Also, if I use another name (just any fake name) than intranet.city.com in the hosts file then I get a valid reply on the ping. This is the first time I notice this behaviour. Is it because they have the same subdomain? Or is it because they have the same NetBIOS name?

    Thanks for the help!
