Keyboard/Touchpad stopped working after sleep mode/lid down on Surface Laptop 4. RRS feed

  • Question

  • we are having this problem in our company , the keyboard/touchpad stop working on Surface devices. (Surface book 2 and Surface laptop 4)

on Surface book 2, the keyboard/tocuhpad stopped working afer upgrading to the latest Windows 11 Version 22H2 , the only solution was deleting the update and restoring the late version.

on Surface Laptop 4 , the Keyboard/Touchpad stopped working many times after waking the device from sleep mode/ Lid off and the only solution i found is to make a Hard reset.

I think it has something to do with Energy-Safe .

I need a solution that ends the problem.

    Best Regards

  • Hello,,

You may try to change this value in regedit instead of gui as you mention its missing on your version:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\USB\AutomaticSurpriseRemoval] "AttemptRecoveryFromUsbPowerDrain"=dword:00000000

  • Hello,

It seems like you are facing issues with the keyboard and touchpad on your Surface devices after waking them from sleep mode or opening the lid. This could potentially be due to power management settings or drivers.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

    1. Update drivers: Go to Device Manager and check for any updates for the keyboard and touchpad drivers. If there are any available, install them and see if the issue is resolved.

    2. Disable Fast Startup: Fast Startup is a power management feature in Windows that could potentially cause issues with waking from sleep mode. Try disabling this feature to see if it resolves the issue. To do this, go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable > Uncheck "Turn on fast startup".

    3. Reset power management settings: Resetting the power management settings to their default values can also help resolve issues with waking from sleep mode. To do this, open Command Prompt as an administrator and type "powercfg -restoredefaultschemes" (without quotes) and press Enter.

    4. Disable selective suspend: Selective suspend is another power management feature that could potentially cause issues with waking from sleep mode. To disable this feature, go to Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers > USB Root Hub > Properties > Power Management > Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

Hopefully, one of these steps will help resolve the issue you are facing with the keyboard and touchpad on your Surface devices.

  • I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with the keyboard/touchpad on your Surface devices. It sounds like you have already tried a few solutions, but the problem is still persisting. Based on what you have described, it's possible that there may be an issue with the power settings on your devices.

One thing you could try is adjusting the power settings to see if that helps. You might also try updating the drivers for the keyboard/touchpad, as this can sometimes help resolve issues like this.

If none of these solutions work, it may be worth reaching out to Microsoft support for further assistance. They may be able to provide more specific guidance based on the exact issue you are experiencing.

I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck in resolving this issue!

  • Hey everyone,

thank you all very much for your replies, I've tried the solutions you've suggested, unfortunalty nothing worked.

the last option in my mind is to perform a new Windows 11 installation , but to be honest, after all the tries and articles about similar problem i read in internet, i am not very enthusiastic, the problem seems like it appeared back in Windows 10 with surface hardwares and remained without a final solution.

only Hard reset works: pressing the power button until the device restarts (about 20 seconds).

    Best Regards
