Can InTune manage macOS operating system versions? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Experts, Our business is considering buying a product called JAMF and my understanding is that it is very similar to InTune. This is in response to a security audit we did that identified old versions of the Safari web browser on Macs. My understanding is that in the Mac world, the Safari web browser is heavily tied to the under-lying MacOS version so in order to get compliant with Safari, we also must upgrade their MacOS. My question is, if we go with InTune what features, if any, does that have to manage MacOS operating system versions. Is there a way to force upgrade users or at least get some basic reporting on their version of Safari so we can get ahead of the out-dated version ?

  • Yes. See https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/intune/macos-enroll.

I don't know if there's a comprehensive feature list though that is specific to MacOS. The feature list can be explored at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/intune/device-management-capabilities.

  • Yes, just note that you will have significantly more control when integrating Intune with Apple Business Manager. This is a fairly tricky process, as it requires your organization to coordinate device addition to the Apple Device Enrollment Program. You will not be able to do this on your own. You'll need to discuss the process with the sales rep for the company you get your Macs from. When you use this method for enrollment and management, you can do just about anything you want with the things. Otherwise, you will have to use the Intune Company Portal for enrolling and managing them, which gives you significantly less control. You should be able to get app version info, but you'll be more limited in what you can do.

  • Just add one point: Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager are available to organizations in supported countries or regions that purchase devices from any of the following channels:

    • Directly from Apple
    • Participating Apple Authorized Resellers
    • Cellular carriers

Device Enrollment works on any of these devices:

    • Mac computers with OS X Mavericks 10.9 or later
