Long term protection issues after MBS migration RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi guys,

We recently moved from legacy storage to MBS with DPM.  We purchased new enclosures, formatted them as ReFS.

I then Stopped protection of all data sources on the old storage, retained disk and tape backups, created new PGs and moved the backups onto the new volume created on the new storage.

Since then, all tape management reports are showing no overdue tapes, so ive had to suspend our long term protection as we have no free tapes.

I read somewhere it was due to the fact id retained data during the move, so i chose a few of our less critical servers and expired the data sets on the tapes to "free" them up.  But still showing no free tapes.

Ive ran DPMsync.exe which did nothing.

    I found this powershell script

which listed about 16 tapes that have expired.  I put them into the tape library and ran an inventory.  They are showing as free(contains data) i cant view the data on them, its greyed out and identifying the tape makes no difference to that.

Ive got a feeling i need to do something in SQL because ive completely recreated the protection groups and obviously the storage is new as well,  i don't know if its a query i need to run against a particular table or the database itself.

If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

We are running DPM 2016 on Server 2016, which was an upgrade from 2012r2

  • Hi Vicky,

So you have old data (retained data) on the tapes, is your goal to keep the data on most of the tapes and delete the data on the expired tapes?

    Best regards,

  • pretty much yeah.

  • As far as I know, the storage migration in DPM 2016 can only be performed from MBS to MBS, migrating from a legacy/classic DPM storage to MBS is unfortunately not supported.

This is most likely the reason why you have issues.

  • Hmm, thats quite irritating if thats the case, as it was Microsoft Support that said i need to do that as we were having other issues.

im hoping that as the tapes are used the tape reports will just sort themselves out as they will be associated with the new PGs.  I guess ill have to use my PS script in the meantime to perform tape rotation manually
