SBS03 Scheduled Task of ShadowCopyVolume{xxxxxxxxx} RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have found that there is a scheduled task of ShadowCopyVolume{xxxxxxxxx} at SBS03 with 2 sets of default scheduled run in AM and PM.

    Please tell me:
    1. What is it?
    2. Can I change or disable the default schedules?

It is because every P.M. all the users need to wait, even if it is only 5 minutes, when they access the shared files at the server.

The command refers to the following:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vssadmin.exe Create Shadow /AutoRetry=5 /For=\\?\Volume{xxxxxxxxx}\

How can I know which drive the "Volume{xxxxxxxxx}" refers to?

    Thanks!

  • Well, you don't want to disable/delete them, as these scheduled tasks are what allows you to retrieve previous versions of files. In my opinion, that feature alone is worth the price of an SBS server.

But you could look to change the time that the scheduled tasks are done.

  • Thank you for your reply.

Can I say that, if I have not enabled and used the function of Previous Version, I can disable it?

Please tell me how I can check which drive the "Volume{xxxxxxxxx}" refers to.

  • The scheduled task is automatically created when Shadow Copies are enabled on a volume.   This feature is enabled by default on SBS and the default schedule is 7am and 12pm Mon-Fri.   The task can be deleted by disabling Shadow Copies on the selected volume.   I would recommend leaving it enabled as previous versions is a valuable feature where files can be restored through Windows Explorer by an admin or user without the absolute need to refer to backups.     Shadow Copies is not a replacement to daily backups however compliments file recovery well.
