Windows 7 Contacts - New Contact button not working RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a user that keeps track of his contacts using the Contacts folder in Windows 7.  When the user clicks the New Contact button, nothing happens.  The user can right-click > New > Contact and everything works properly.  The only issue is the New Contact button on the toolbar.  I ran sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt, but no issues were found.  Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Answers

  • Hi,

From your log file, we could see when you click that button, it cannot invoke the corresponding command file. It cannot create the C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe and C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\wab32.dll files. Please check if you have this file in and the permission.

Meanwhile, I suggest you use the original installation media to repair the installation.

  • Hi,

Did this issue only occur under this user account or all accounts on this computers? Did other button(like New Contact Group)work?

Please run process monitor to trace the activity when you click on that button:

    Process Monitor v3.1

Here is a blog about how to use it, you could refer to this:

  • Thank you for your reply.  I have answered your questions below.

Did this issue only occur under this user account or all accounts on this computers?

Yes.  I tried to see if the behavior was repeated under another account and the exact same behavior was displayed.

Did other button(like New Contact Group)work?

No.  The New Contact Group button did not work either.

I ran Process Monitor, started a capture, clicked on the button, and stopped the capture.  After reviewing the captured information, nothing stuck out at me as being odd.

  • Hi,

This issue occurs for all user accounts, it's not the user profile issue.

Could you send the captured trace to this address for analysis:

     ibswcic@microsoft.com

Note: Email subject should be thread link.

Meanwhile, let's boot into Safe Mode to see what happeded.

  • Karen,

    Thank you for the reply.

The log file has been sent.

When I boot into Safe Mode, the same behavior is observed under different profiles.  Nothing happens when I click the New Contact button.
