Unable to install Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 8 Release Preview on RTM 8 Enterprise

    Question

  • Unable to install Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 8 Release Preview on RTM 8 Enterprise

    Standalone installer available here

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28972

    fails with error code 0x80004005

Is this because my installation has issues, or would the admin pack files be updated for RTM?

Thank you in advance for any insight

    Workaround:

    1. Download the RSAT package intended for Windows 8 Release Preview: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28972
    2. Extract the .msu file with a tool such as 7-Zip.
    3. Open an Admin command prompt and change directory to where you extracted the .msu.
    4. Run the following command to install (if x86 you probably have a different .xml filename): pkgmgr /n:Windows6.2-KB2693643-x64.xml
    5. Wait a while. You can look in task manager for pkgmgr. When it disappears, the installation is done.
    6. Use the tools as per usual.

  • I get the same. I suspect we'll need to wait for an update...

  • you have the answer yourself. The RSAT you used released for Windows 8 RC, not RTM, you have to wait for the release for RTM.

  • Server RTMs on Sept 4th, I assume it will land then. (can't wait to start the migration to HyperV).

  • Thank you very much for this workaround.  It works great and buys us time for the official release.

  • Same.

Has anyone actually gotten this to work on Server 2012?

  • I get an error now that is saying "pkgmgr" is deprecated and to use DISM.exe but help gives no clue as to how to use it with the ".xml" file.
