Windows 2012 RDS: prevent metro start screen

    Question

  • Hello All,

I have a 2012 machine functioning as an RDS server. I've found that every time i connect to the rds, the metro start screen appears. Does anyone know how to disable this from happening?

btw, i only have a SBS2k8 running as DC and no 2012 admx files. cheers.

    regards,

  • I'll give you two options. Download the admx files and import them into 2008, or follow this video and use classic shell so you get rid of the metro screen, the video also includes how to lock it down inside of registry for deployment inside of something such as a school where you wouldn't want kids messing around with it.

Let me know how you get on. If you take option one and need help setting up let me know.

  • Thanks mate.

I already knew about the first option but have never overwritten admx files like this before. as i understand it, if i were to just overwrite the startmenu.admx with the newer 2012 admx, that would not effect existing GPs which are in place and using the older sbs2k8 startmenu admin templates - does that sound right?

the video looks interesting but i dont think my boss would allow it.

  • Are you running any clients or remote desktop session hosts using the 2008 GPO'S? if not then your fine to go. but if your using your GPO for existing things they will probably be wiped and be needed to be redone after that they should effect Operating systems from Xp-8.1 server 2003-2012 R2 thats your only choice unless you modify the registry on the 2012 server to prevent metro start up.

    • If possible I would suggest upgrading your 2008Sbs to 2012 r2

Yes the video shows a piece of software which many companies are using to get rid of the horrible metro screen permanently. Personally I'd suggest classic shell, its what I use. Its easy to use and to install and takes you to the windows 7/10 days. Might need to persuade your boss

  • Resolved!

found a suggested link to the left of this page which had this URL:

    http://microsoftplatform.blogspot.nl/2012/11/predefining-and-customizing-modern-ui.html

this allowed me to customise the start menu and set for all users logging onto the RDS. cheers!
