Grid (MDX) alias dimension name RRS feed

  • Question

  • I need to alias a dimension name. While I can successfully alias measure names, when I try to alias a dimension name, the display ignores the alias. For example, the query:

    WITH MEMBER [Year] AS ([Date of Incident].[Year])

    SELECT
    { [Measures].[Fatalities] }
    ON COLUMNS,

    HIERARCHIZE( {[Year].&[2005], [Year].&[2006], [Year].&[2007],[Year].&[2008] } )
    ON ROWS
    FROM [TrafficSafety]

    still returns the full dimension name ([Date of Incident]) in the analytic grids. Is there any way to rename a dimension for this grid, short of resorting to HierarchyUniqueNameStyle (and affecting all other parts where the dimension name is needed)?

  • I am not aware of an option to be able to alias a dimension name unless you were utilizing stored procedures to do your renaming by using OPENQUERY and a LinkedServer setup to your SSAS source.  The syntax above would be creating a member in the measures and that is not what you are trying to do.
