Reporting Point over remote multiple instance SQL Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    The scenario is the following:

    • 1 CAS SCCM 2012 R2
    • 1 Primary SCCM 2012 R2
    • 1 SQL Server 2012 SP2. 2 Instances. Each instance has Database Engine Services and Reporting Services - Native.

The CAS and Primary installation was OK.

The reporting point for CAS (default SQL instance) installation was OK.

The reporting point for Primary (named SQL instance) installation is not possible. The reports node at SCCM console is empty. Both of the SRS instances was automatically configured, at installation (Install and Configure).

    The question is:

Is it possible to use the same SRS to host 2 reporting points? (1 for CAS, 1 for Primary. Each at different instance)

    Thanks in advance!

  • Yes, it's technically possible, but it makes no sense. The CAS and primary will contain the exact same data in this case so what's the point though?

Also, why do you even have a CAS if you only have a single primary? You should only ever have a CAS if you have multiple primary sites and the only time you should use multiple primary sites if for scalability; e.g., 100,000+ managed Windows systems.

  • Thanks Jason for your help.

The above scenario was previously installed by a client. They have problems with reporting point.

    Thanks!

If you are having problems with the RP, what does the log say is the issue?

  • Hi Garth,

There is not srsrp.log (primary site server or remote SQL server).

At primary site, at SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT component:

Site Component Manager detected that this component should be installed on this site system. Site Component Manager will attempt to install the component every 60 minutes until the installation succeeds.

    and

Component Status Summarizer detected that the availability of component "SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT" on computer "BP1SQL.mydomain.com" has changed to Online.

The reports node at SCCM console is still empty.

From primary site server is possible to open http://bp1sql/Reports_PRI1 and http://bp1sql/ReportServer_PRI1

Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Thanks Garth for your help.

At CAS site at SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT component there are the following messages (but no at Primary site):

Site Component Manager is installing this component on this site system.

Site Component Manager successfully installed this component on this site system.

    This component started.

    Reports node at CAS:

    Reports node at Primary:

    Thanks in advance!

  • If you can see the reporting within SSRS(IE) then this is likely a permissions issue.

  • Thanks Garth,

The following are the SSRS from Primary site server:

I will validate permissions at SSRS.

    Thanks!

  • On the primary server do you see the Role installed?

  • Hi,

The solution was create another SQL instance. The reporting point was installed at this new SQL instance.

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

At another customer I get the same scenario. They want to use the same server for hosting DBs and reports for CAS site and 2 Primary sites.

    The message is:

Site Component Manager detected that site system "\\ECBPPRQSM.MYDOMAIN.NET" is currently in use by ConfigMgr site CAS.

Possible cause: You accidentally configured this site system as part of this site and as part of site CAS.
Solution: Remove this site system from the list of site systems for this site or for site CAS.

The question remains basically the same:

Is it possible to use the same SRS to host 3 reporting points? (1 for CAS, 2 for Primary. Each at different instance)

    Thanks in advance!

No I don't think that you can. I thin you need one instance per Site.

Again going back to Jason point, it just doesn't make sense to have two or more primary sites (or a CAS)  share a SQL Instance or server.
