Uninstalling/removing SP3 for MOSS/SharePoint 2007 RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are planning to attempt applying MOSS 2007 SP3 on Production environment which consists all Physical servers. As a back up, we are planning the following things

    1) Full Back up all the SharePoint DB's from Production

    2) Full back up all the WFE's and APP servers ( backing up all the drives in each server)

    Rollback Option

Regarding rollback approach, i would like to check on the following approaches

    1) In the event of triggering rollback, can we simply restore all the SharePoint DB back up's taken prior applying SP3 keeping the state on the WFE's and APP server as -is. Will this bring back the application to working state?

    2) As a second option, can we restore all the drive back up taken on all the WFE's and APP server on the respective servers besides restoring all the SharePoint DB's prior applying SP3. Will this bring back the environment back to SP2?

    Thanks in Advance!

  • Yes a full backup of the file server is a reliable way to backup the SharePoint servers.  But as I mentioned.  The content for SharePoint is in the SQL server databases so you need to make sure those are backed up as well.

  • Since the service pack will update the physical DLLs on the server you will need to restore everything on the servers and the DBs in order to roll back to pre-SP3.

  • Thanks Paul. For restore option, can a simple restore of all the server back up's taken prior to SP3 will be sufficient? Will this bring back the SharePoint version and application back to SP2? Thanks in Advance.

  • YOu need to restore both the server and the databases, since the schema of the database was probably updated during installation of the service pack.

  • Thanks Paul. In our case, we are on Physical servers and the back up planned for the server is to take the entire server Full back up which is a file system level and not at a server level.

Is this a reliable server back up approach which can be referred in case if we need to rollback the server state to previous? Please let us know. Thanks in advance!
