  • Question

  • Greetings,
    the last day of the year couldn't just simply pass without the helpdesk jumping on my neck with the following:
    A user logged in on our Terminal Server today and tried to start an application which doesn't happen. Instead the user gets an error:
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    The Application Virtualization Client could not launch App 6.00.2900.2180.
    The system cannot find the path specified.
    Error code: 45141AB-1B40212C-00000003
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    There was at least one other user using this application on the same server without issue. (its a Jinit IE plugin package)
    If the user logs off and goes to another server, the app starts just fine. The app just won't start on that server that day (will probably work fine again after it reboots).

    The sftlog.txt has this information:
    [12/31/2009 09:41:36:540 ???? ERR] {tid=29C:usr=username}

    All Apps are preloaded.

  • Hello,

    1. Try to reset the cache-file and reload the application

    I am suspecting, if you have a similiar environment through out your farm, that there were some type of memory issue and that the cache was corrupted in the worst case scenario.

    Verify that AV-settings are the same as on other servers.

  • The other user is still using the app, so I don't think I can reset the cache file now? (we do a nightly sftmime.exe /remove obj:app /complete /global clear command) and preload all the apps fresh...

    AV-Settings not an issue (100% sure).

  • Hello,

    I would more recommend to wipe the entire cache-file (do a complete reset), not just the specific app. However just reset the specific app would be a good start :)

    Yeah, you would probably wait until there are no users logged on until you start troubleshooting.

    See this aswell;

  • I pretty confident that wiping the app from the cache will solve the issue but today I have almost no users logged in and on that troublesome server I have one user using that app (so no biggy). But in the coming weeks I might see 10-15 users using an app. If it happens then I can't keep saying to users to logoff and logon and hope they land on a server where it doesn't happen.
    I haven't got a clue on where to start troubleshooting because there is zero information on the microsoft support site (of course there are the sysinternals* tools but I'll be damned to go out and chase another of MS red herrings) This package works fine on other servers (except when it doesn't)    :-)

  • Hello,

    well, hence my suggestion;
    1. If the truely is no problem with the package it probably relates to either a memory issue (however, they mostly show up with c3 (or 3c?) at the end) or a user profile problem (see 2)
    Now, taking this into consideration you either have a server that acts differently and for some reason has a problem with the cache / user profile (I have seen issues where some profiles suddenly were refusing to unload due to a 20-30 day uptime and thus memory were exhausted) or a memory problem that arises to quickly.

    To resolve this you need to know a lot more of how the server is setup, what its current load is and where its spikes have been.
    We aim for a 7 day uptime with about 40-50 users without issues. If a server for some reason crashes on the 8th day (the automatic reboot failed?) we do not troubleshoot it. Anything below that we extensivly map where memory, cpu and disk I/O goes and what behaviour it causes.

    2. If its only a problem with loading the user profile it could be due to a misconfiguration?
    Unfortunately I do not know the 2c-xxxxxxxx error and can't say what mechanism within App-v it relates to (yeah I have been whining on MS for documentation on new error messages and keep doing it for the 4.6 RC2 release - unfortunately many of them needs a pretty high user load to occur).
    Can you verify the users environment, can you verify other informational messages from the server? How is it setup and what happens when the users profile load? Since you are using Powerfuse, is that acting as expected?

  • Can you please share some your techniques you use to :"we extensivly map where memory, cpu and disk I/O goes and what behaviour it causes" ? (always looking for new methods of troubleshooting)

    We currently reboot our TS's every night and during the reboot we clear the softgrid cache out and preload all the apps.

    I looked at powerfuse as a suspect on the server. I tried logging in with my testuser through RDP(without the powerfuse shell) and starting the OSD directly from the VAS server. Starting the App that way gave the same error. (Eventhough Powerfuse isn't cleared by any means) I also don't have any evidence to blame it either (for now..)
    TIA

  • Hello,

    SysInternals always a good tool for pretty much all tasks;

  • I know about sysinternals and have used most of the tools along the years..was just wondering how and what you would use to tackle a problem such as this..maybe Mark R. has some spare time to write a blogpost about this subject :)

  • Hello,

    Here is a webcast that explains and shows an example of howto use their tools to troubleshoot;

  • Hey AlphenIT

    Did you ever resolve your issue?  I am having the same issue on just one of my 22 Terminal Servers.  Have to reboot it almost everyother day due to the issue.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

    Sometimes still happens with another app but not so much the last couple of months no clues yet what triggers this.

    You could try upgrading your client to the newer AppV 4.5 SP1 with hotfix 001/002 and see what happens...
    Happy at least that somebody else has seen this issue..
    let us know what happens..
