Content types RRS feed

  • Question

  • I need to setup up content types for managing learning content. We are a very small business (3 people) who create learning content for sale.

    • The smallest piece of content is a Lesson
    • Lessons are used in one or more Courses
    • Courses can be used in one or more Curriculum

We wanted the document library to hold the Lessons with basic library columns for Title, Name, Description, Version, etc. and have Content Types for Courses, Curriculum, and Author to start.

I know where to go to create the content types but I am unclear as to what to do next - i.e. how do I enter course names and the names of curriculum, and the Authors Names so I can associate them to the Lessons in the document library.

  • Before creating the content types, decide what type of content (metadata) you would be storing in courses and curriculum. I think you have already done this for lessons. Do the same analysis for courses and curriculum then you can create site columns in your site for those content. Once you have decide metadata and created site columns then go ahead and create content types for those three. You can always inherit from base content type while creating your custom content type. After creation of content type attach them to list or libraries accordingly.

The below article should help you to understand more about site columns and content types.
