SharePoint Folder Permission

    Question

  • Hi Guys;

     We just started to use sharepoint online as FileServer and our clients can access their files from the map under the computer tab.

    My problem is users can't see the whole folder list on main folder.They can see just where they have permission.

    I want all users able to see main folders but cant go inside if they dont have permission.

    how to do that ?

    Thanks.

  • SharePoint doesn't let you do that. If you don't have permission to something SharePoint won't even let you see that it exists. That's for good reasons, a folder labeled 'Redundancy Round 2016' might be slightly disconcerting to staff if they saw it before it was announced, or 'Fabrikam Merger planning' could cause some serious implications if people found it before it's announced.

    In theory you could give people access to the folders but break the permission of everything inside, but that's a terrible idea and will cause more pain than help.

    You could try using links in the library, those can be left for everyone to see but if someone who doesn't have access clicks on it then it'd block them as per usual.

    Finally SharePoint Online isn't a file server replacement. If you're using the mapped drive approach to things then it'll work but you'll miss out on most of the useful features. It's like driving a car and only ever using first gear.
