Vista Not booting starts in safe mode

Question

Thanks ahead of time for taking the time to read this problem. Also I'm really sorry if this is the wrong forum, I found a similar problem to this here but didn't help me, figured I'd post this here.I have been looking all around for a solution to this and cannot find anything. This isn't my computer, it's my friends, and he hasn't been able to get back on it. Sometimes it starts in Safe Mode, sometimes it doesn't.The computer seems to restart constantly when he tries to boot it normally. About 1/20 times it will start properly, but after some time it will restart again while he's using it. Just seems to crash. He does not have the disk for vista. It came pre-installed on his system. It is a desktop, not a laptop. He managed to catch a d0000144 error at one point now. I can't pinpoint a reason for this. He has mcAfee protection on his computer, he tried to install AVG but it crashed during the install and now won't work at all. Not even safe mode. He's tried a chkdisc and it seemed to fix some stuff but then crashed. He also at one point turned off all processes and it booted normally. But that's when he tried to install AVG and it failed. Please help. I've run out of ideas and I can't find a solution online that seems to work. Any suggestions are useful. Thank you for your time.Wednesday, May 20, 2009 5:09 AM

Hello,
According to the problem description, you might ask your friend to order the replacement Setup disk from the OEM first and then do an in-place upgrade installation of Windows Vista.
In-place Upgrade Installation
Technically, you won’t lose any data to take an In-place Upgrade Installation. In order to avoid any unexpected problem, I suggest you backup your data before taking In-place Upgrade Installation.
1. Start the computer by using the current Operating System.
2. Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive.
3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate:
• If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears.
Click Install now.
• If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, type (Drive: )\setup.exe in the Start Search box, and then click Enter.
Note: (Drive: ) is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive.
b. Click Install now.
4. When you reach the "Which type of installation do you want?" screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows Vista.

If the above steps do not work well, I suggest him format the computer and rebuild the system to narrow down the issue. Meanwhile, he'd better send his computer back to store to confirm there is no issue with the hardware device.
Hope it helps.

probably you have an hardware problem, maybe hd...
the first easy step is a memory test. if you have vista installed, in boot menu, select memtest
if you can, change hd, install an os and try itWednesday, May 20, 2009 7:38 AM -

Hi,
Did you say that your friend tried to install AVG on a computer already running Mcafee? Running two anti-virus programs on the same computer is very bad for your computers health,
When you press F8 do you get an option to "repair this computer"?
I think that you need to run system restore to roll back to before AVG was installed. You can do this from the "repair this computer" or even from safe mode. you can find system restore by typing it into the search bar in the start menu
