Win10Home-to-Enterprise upgrade created un-unlockable Bitlocker drives when interrupted RRS feed

  • Question

  • Upraded my Win10Home into Enterprise with the VL install key for purposes of completing Bitlocker on 2 drives while my main computer was busy. Everything proceeding well with Drive1 so added Drive2 to be encrypted. Only with the crucial mistake of Drive2 being the backup of Drive1. You might see already where we're heading...dumb and dumber, it just happens sometimes.

Suddenly there was a freak power cut, and the UPS malfunctioned by being slow to step in. The computer restarted while the encryption was only 5% complete for Drive1, and 1% for Drive2. Full disk encryption for both.

Bitlocker shows both drives as locked in Control Panel. Click on "Unlock drive" brings out a popup window saying "The BitLocker encryption on this drive isn't compatible with your version of Windows. Try opening the drive using a newer version of Windows." ?!?

The password/recovery phrase is correct please don't suggest that. I copypasted them into safekeeping when creating the Bitlocker volumes.

Moved the disks to another computer running Win10Pro for testing, same outcome. All computer were freshly updated last week, whatever version/build that was then.

For comparison, the power cut also interrupted a Bitlocker process on the main computer running Win10Pro and nothing bad happened, Bitlocker simply continued where it had been interrupted. But on this Home->Enterprise upgrade something went very wrong. And most unfortunately that backup drive was the only backup for my irreplaceable data.

Sometimes the drive is suddenly recognized as unlocked after many tries, and then in format RAW, without filesystem. Windows wants to format the drive then. GPT partition. Both Drive1 and Drive2 are external USB drives of similar make and model, which were connected to USB3 connectors.

  • It is *really* interesting that Pro can recover from interrupted Bitlocker encryption just fine, I've now tested it multiple times. Whereas Home upgraded to Enterprise seems to fail on the first time. Bit of a bug somewhere, eh.

Guess the data is irrevocably lost.

  • "The BitLocker encryption on this drive isn't compatible with your version of Windows. Try opening the drive using a newer version of Windows."
    and "
BitLocker Drive Encryption: Repair Tool version 10.0.17134"
    but on  a (german) Windows 10 1809, I get "
    BitLocker-Laufwerkverschlüsselung: Reparaturtool, Version10.0.17763"

So perhaps the Windows Home version (which is always updated to the newest version) had a newer bitlocker version than what you are now using for unlock.

  • Hi,

BitLocker is not available on Windows 10 Home edition. It’s available on Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise and Education editions.
