Windows media player - unregmp2.exe this application has failed to start because WSOCK32.DLL was not found was not found RRS feed

  • Question

  • Windows media player will not open. You can click on it all you want and it does not open. I have gone to the site "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925704/en-us" and ran the fixit but when you run windows media player  it comes up with the error "unregmp2.exe this application has failed to start because WSOCK32.DLL was not found was not found ". I have searched and WSOCK32.DLL is there in the system32 folder.

How can i get this to work. I have VLC media player and divx player and both work without issues.

  • This is a Windows DLL which is part of Windows. To repair the file, do this:
Please start the command prompt (cmd.exe) with admin rights [1] and run sfc [2]:

    sfc.exe /scannow

Is it able to find and repair broken files (create the txt file shown under [2] and look if all files are restored)?

If all files were restored run the unregmp2.exe.

    best regards

  • I still haven't gotten windows media player to run on this windows vista box.  I don't get the above error anymore but windows media player doesn't even start at all. I have other players like VLC, DIVX, and Quicktime which run flawlessly. So it is not a codec problem.

I also stuck a version of windows media classic on there and it runs without a problem. So what could be the reason? I even went to microsofts FIX IT sight which not only didn't fix it but messed it up more.
