DPM encountered a retryable VSS error. (ID 30112) on standalone Hypervisors with 2008 R2 SP1 Hypervisors RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Everyone,

Found a lot of information on this in the forums but nothing relating to our situation. We have 4 standalone 2008 R2 SP1 Hypervisors running between 1 and 3 Virtual Machines running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

All the virtual machines are running the Integration components version 6.1.7601.17514. The Hypervisors are running version 6.1.7601.17617 which seems to be related to security hotfix MS11-047 which when you try to install it in a VM says not applicable so I assume the hotfix is only related to hypervisors, not guests.

I mention this because in theory the VM Guest/host levels for the integration tools should be the same level.

We are running DPM 2010 with all rollups delivered via Windows Update installed. The error we get on DPM is as follows

    Type:    Consistency check
    Status:    Failed
Description:    DPM encountered a retryable VSS error. (ID 30112 Details: VssError:The writer experienced a transient error.  If the backup process is retried,
    the error may not reoccur.

When we watch the backup in HyperV Manager, it completes successfully, and there are no errors in the guest for VSS. We get the following error on the host.

    HyperV-V-VMMS Logfile

    Error 10111

Failed to mount the virtual hard disk '\\?\STC_SnapShot_Volume_21_0\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks\HA-AD01-Data-Disk.vhd' for virtual machine 'HA-AD01' (Virtual machine ID 89D6379F-2C76-4553-89BB-4161274E8CBF).

We have tried turning Automount on and off with no difference, enabled Previous versions on the guest and successfully made shadowcopies, so are at a loss why this isn't working.

It seems like all the VSS stuff is working, but then DPM cannot mount the VHD for some reason???
