Adding WinPE drivers in MDT RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Techies,

Just wanted to know the effect of WinPE drivers in Offline Media. Here's scenario we have captured the Images from VMs as well as from Surface Devices. Deploying the Images using Offline Media, where we have added drivers in the VM Captured Image while In Physical Captured Media we haven't added any drivers.

Is there any need to Add drivers in WinPE Phase for both the images? If Yes! what is the need of adding drivers in that phase.

will it affect the deployment process ? As I can understand we're adding network\Display drivers in WinPE Phase for access the network, touch effect works. but as we are using Offline Media is it required?

Please help me to understand the logic.

    Thanks!!

  • You answered it yourself: the basic idea is to keep the boot image as lean as possible and add storage / network drivers if you are running into issues with storage / network access. Then again, your MDT deployment share are configured to inject storage / network drivers from the "All Drivers" profile by default, so if you are are running default config you may want to change that to "Nothing", rebuild boot images / offline media and try again. If it works - great, if it doesn't switch to using dedicated WinPE driver packages.

  • Thanks Anton for the clarification. that means there's no dependency of build with drivers in WinPE Phase if everything went fine. As we're injecting drivers in later phase. So unnecessarily It will increase the Size of boot image.

  • Correct. Check Johan Arwidmarks article on driver management in MDT (it applies both to network boot and offline media): https://deploymentresearch.com/Research/Post/325/MDT-2013-Lite-Touch-Driver-Management
